The town of Bakau in the Gambia is located on a low cliff between the mouth of the River Gambia and the Atlantic Ocean. Bakau is a bustling town with a maze of small dirt roads, and guests staying here can experience the real Africa. There are restaurants serving traditional Gambian dishes along with banks, supermarkets, post office and the popular Kachikally crocodile pool located deep in the heart of the city. The coastal area plays host to a number of hotels and small family run guest houses such as the African Village Hotel, Cape Point Hotel, Sunbeach Beach, Garden Guesthouse, Romana Afram and others. Its coastline is fringed with palm trees and the beach of rocky cliff edges. Bakau is mainly a working beach and the fishing boats called pirogues are often found at the jetty that is used to haul in the catch. For a day away from the beach the national park of Abuko has birds galore, as well as porcupine, monkeys and some snappy crocs.
